Appointed Watchmaker to the Royal Navy in 1815, Abraham-Louis Breguet developed chronometers capable of maintaining a regular rate despite the movements of the ship and variations in temperature. Used together with the sextant, these instruments enabled navigators to determine their longitude and accompanied several major expeditions of the 19th century.
