Breguet Marine Dame

Marine women

by Jeffrey S. Kingston

There has long been a connection between prestige timepieces and precious metals – particularly for women’s models – the precious metal playing one of the key roles in defining the watch’s personality. That remains true today but with one new dimension. Steel has joined the family. Added to the understatement and subtlety that has always been a virtue of white metal, steel is now highly prized for its “wear anytime with anything” vibe. So it is that steel has come to occupy a prominent place in the Women’s Marine collection.

The women’s Marine collection now offers choices in stainless steel, including the option of an integrated stainless steel bracelet.

MARINE WOMEN 9518

Breguet has enrichened the Marine Women’s collection with a wide range of models which include the options of a steel bracelet, rubber
or leather straps; blue or gray dials; unique lacquered dials; and winding rotors featuring a guilloched mother of pearl insert.

In common with all models in the Women’s Marine collection, the steel Marines have echoed the themes from the men’s collection, albeit with their own unique artistic expressions. All of the versions feature automatic winding, a large seconds hand and date window. Understated with its steel bracelet and either a gray or blue dial, the touches of diamond on the bezel and dial indexes brighten the presentation without overpowering. Casual enough for the beach or with jeans, dressy enough for the evening. The movement offers its own discrete pleasures when viewed through the clear sapphire case back, as the winding rotor for most versions has been embellished with a mother of pearl hand guilloché insert on the winding rotor. For the steel versions, the rotor is carried out in solid gold with a guilloché finish.

An entirely different “look” is found with steel models fitted with blue lacquered dials. Each of these dials is painted by hand, mixing two shades of blue which are delicately brushed upon the surface to create an abstract theme with the interplay of the two hues. No two blue lacquer dials are alike as the patterns for each are unique. The lacquer dial Marines are offered with either a rubber or a leather strap.

Fine mechanics are as much a part of the Marine women’s collection as for the men’s models. Visible through the sapphire case back is the elaborately hand finished movement with its winding rotor fitted with a guilloched mother of pearl inlay and diamond setting.

Of course, the new Women’s Marine collection includes classic precious metal models carried out in either rose gold or white gold with mother of pearl dials. All of the gold cases feature diamond set bezels. The dials for the gold models showcase Breguet’s guilloché savoir faire as the mother of pearl surface has been delicately guilloché with an original wave pattern fitting to the nautical spirit of the Marine collection. For the white gold version, the dial has been given a blue hue; in the case of the rose gold model, the shade is pale white. A subtle touch of diamond is also found on the two guards that flank the crown. The winding rotors of the movements offer guilloché mother of pearl decoration plus diamonds set on the outer edge. The bridges themselves finished with a côte droite motif. The strap choices for the gold models are similar to those of the blue lacquer Marines: either rubber or alligator may be selected, both in colors harmonizing with the dial.
