Patent registered by Abraham-Louis Breguet on the 26th of June, 1801 (7 Messidor year IX of the Republican calendar). The Tourbillon (or whirlwind) regulator, indissolubly linked with the name of its inventor, was intended to compensate for the errors and fluctuations in functioning due to the inevitable changes in position experienced by watches.
The invention consisted of mounting the escapement on a mobile plateform (or carriage) which revolved on itself in a given period. Errors were thus reproduced regularly and so cancelled one another out. The Tourbillon was not only one of the most famous of Breguet's inventions but also one of the most difficult to realize.
