This elaborate “complication” marks the hours automatically every hour on the hour with two strikes, repeated three times, a charming and discreet way of signalling the passage of time. Case: egg-shaped in 18-carat white gold with finely fluted caseband. Bezel set with 30 diamonds, approx. 3 cts. Dial in natural white mother-of-pearl. One diamond indicates the on/off setting of the hour-strike in an aperture at 12 o’clock. self-winding movement in a shape of a dove.
The gong spring, invented in 1783, is a strip of metal that replaced the traditional bell and improved sound quality.
A.-L. Breguet was the first to discover, through his oscillating platinum-weight watch, a formula which would produce a reliable automatic watch. Breguet sold one of his first self-winding watches to Queen Marie-Antoinette.
